Unicef Sciences Po Menton kicks of the year with a mental health week in honor of international mental health day. Read below to learn about two innitiatives: wellness yoga sunday and the informational instagram posts on mental disorders.
Mindful Sunday
An initiative led by Lenora D'Souza, Viola Luraschi, and Vanessa Lolomari, the week kicked off with a meditation yoga Sunday led by Lilinaz Hakimi and Daniel Santana. Hosted on Sablettes, Sciences Po students were able to come relax, practice mindful meditation and yoga. The timing was great as midterms were coming up!
In addition to the mental health benefits, yoga has been proven to improve brain function such as decision making, learning, and memory, making it an important form of exercise. In addition to improved brain function, yoga has also been proven to boost your mood by lowering levels of stress hormones and increasing endorphins, chemicals that make you feel happiness:)
We hope that our mindful Sunday initiative was able to help with your overall well-being and mental health, and we hope it encouraged you to see how easy it was to grab your yoga mat, some friends, and a speaker and practice some mindful meditation!
Instagram Series in Honor of International Mental Health Day
This year, World Mental Health Day took place on October 10th, and was centralized around the idea of raising awareness on mental health issues around the world in addition to "mobilizing efforts in support of mental health."
There is an important stigma surrounding mental disorders and overall mental health, which may appear as a barrier for a person getting the help they need. "Avoid stigmatising people with mental illness by seeing the person first and not just labeling them by their mental illness. You can help challenge stigma by speaking up when you hear people around you make negative or wrong comments about mental illness."
To raise awareness on various common mental illnesses, Unicef Sciences Po Menton created a series of Instagram posts that discussed the following mental illnesses: Autism, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Down Syndrome, and Tourettes. See these posts below!
Though October 10th is officially marked as International Mental Health day, activism and education on mental health and mental illnesses should not just be limited to this singular day. It is a continuous, and ongoing effort to fight the stigma and to become educated on the subject. See these posts below!
